The Communication Studies program is the School of Communication’s sole cross-divisional, interdisciplinary undergraduate course of study. It is a liberal arts-oriented major that draws on the strengths of the School’s Journalism, Public Communication, and Film and Media Arts curricula. Comm Studies thus reflects the convergence that characterizes the communications disciplines. The Comm Studies program is intended for students seeking a broad-based, intellectually challenging course of study that will allow them to expand and deepen their understanding of the political, social, cultural, global, and historical dimensions of communications disciplines. Majors focus their studies in one of four areas of concentration: History of Media, International Media, Media and Government, and Media and Society. The program offers students in-depth exposure to the scholarship and intellectual trends in communication while allowing students to gain familiarity with fundamental skills that define journalism, public communication, and film and media arts. The breadth and rigor of the Comm Studies major prepare students to pursue graduate studies and research, and/or professional careers in communication. Graduates of the program have enrolled in graduate school or law school, and have landed entry-level professional positions.
