The main objective of the Degree Programme in Midwifery is to train professionals able to perform specific activities focusing on the physical and psychological well-being of women, couples andfamilies throughout their development (birth, childhood, adolescence, maturity, pregnancy, menopause, third age), in their relative social context, with competences and professional skills that can also be exploited abroad. The quality and quantity of practical activities and internships meet the relative EC requirements, and specifically the theoretical and practical training standards are in line with Directives EC 80/154 - 80/155 - 2005/36.

The learning areas are: Biomedical and Biological Sciences, Hygiene and Prevention sciences, Human and Psycho-Pedagogic Sciences, Ethical, Legal and Organisational Sciences, Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatal Sciences, Computer Sciences and Linguistics will provide Midwifery graduates with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to provide quality services considering health needs.

The mandatory internship, covering midwifery, gynaecology and neonatology, is a qualifying, integral part of the Degree Programme.

The learning outcomes and clinical internship are understood as authentic drivers of motivation, striving for the utmost quality and ensuring the continuous development of learning standards for students and future professionals.

For this purpose the availability of internship facilities is reviewed annually, in terms of the number of available tutors, beds and the number of services provided. The internship coordinator uses this review to map the training opportunities in each facility and plan the internship activities in line with the learning outcomes.

The assessment of the clinical internship will be based on:

  1. the evaluation report, considering general, behavioural and professional aspects with particular focus on the practical application of theoretical studies, considering the outcomes set in line with the place of study and year of the programme, completed by the tutor and discussed with the student
  2. the attendance sheet, signed daily by the tutor, in line with the required work hours established for the programme and
  3. the programme internship record book, which certifies all the actions required by the ministerial decree in order to graduate.

Agreements with various healthcare authorities and one private facility serve to offer a range of internships matching a wide range of career opportunities.

Safeguarding the professionalism of the future midwives, the Internship Coordinator liaises constantly with the Healthcare Authorities to monitor their professional training, continuously revising the course units and teaching contents in line with technological and professional advancements to allow graduates to immediately embark on professional careers.

At the end of the three-year programme, graduates will have acquired knowledge and technical, interpersonal and educational competences in obstetric, neonatal and gynaecological care, as well as the learning skills required to continue onto 2nd cycle studies,1st level professional masters' programmes and post-graduate training courses.
