About Newcastle University

About Newcastle University

A Global Top 130 university (QS World University Rankings 2025), Newcastle University is home to 29,000 students from over 135 countries.

A founding member of the Russell Group, we have been awarded a 5+ QS Star rating for overall excellence (2024).

We can trace our origins back to the School of Medicine and Surgery, established in 1834. Our Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering recently marked 150 years of invention and innovation.

Today, we combine world-leading research with an outstanding academic experience.

A global leader in the key research strengths of ageing and health, data, cities and place, one planet, culture and creative arts, we are pioneering solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing the world. In the UK’s Research Excellence Framework 2021, 42% of our research was scored as world leading.

Through 5-star teaching (QS Stars 2024), we educate for life. Students are challenged and supported to learn from world-class experts and academics across more than 185 undergraduate and over 300 postgraduate degrees.

We are a partner in the £350 million Newcastle Helix, a global centre for science, technology, research and education. We host three national innovation centres in ageing, data and rural enterprises, and are home to an Urban Observatory, the largest open platform of urban sensing data in the UK.

Proud to be a University of Sanctuary, we promote a campus and community-wide culture of welcome, engagement and safety for people fleeing persecution and violence.

We were also one of the first universities to sign up to the UK Government’s Emissions Reduction Pledge and are working to reach net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2030.

Our international outlook

With campuses in Newcastle, Singapore (offering engineering degrees) and Malaysia (providing undergraduate medical and biomedical education), we are dedicated to nurturing a diverse, internationally networked community of students. We have 5 QS Star 2024 credentials in both inclusiveness and internationalisation.

A 270,000-strong global alumni network complements our strong links with national and international employers, including Siemens Research and Innovation Ecosystem (Siemens RIE), PwC, FDM, Accenture and Arup.

University information

Our Undergraduate applications in the UK are through UCAS.

All our courses have their own required criteria, and this is published on our University website. ABB is typically the minimum requirement with many courses requiring higher grades. The international qualification equivalencies are also published on our website.  When applying it is important to provide full details of previous and current qualifications to evidence ability to meet the criteria.

Our Newcastle campus

Our facilities are five-star (QS Stars 2023) and cutting edge as we continue to invest millions in our 50-acre city-centre campus to create a first-class student and research environment.

We’ve recently invested £110m in our Stephenson Building, a world-class engineering hub for the next generation of engineers, researchers, designers, and visionaries. Our new Sir Terry Farrell Centre for architecture and urban design opened in February 2023. On-campus state-of-the-art teaching and study spaces include:

  • Medical School and Dental School – one of the largest integrated teaching and hospital complexes in the UK, linking directly to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.
  • some of the best equipped teaching facilities for pharmacy in the UK.
  • fine art studios including specialist multi-media workshops. Facilities are linked to the Hatton Gallery, one of the North East’s largest exhibition spaces that’s used for our Fine Art degree shows.
  • on-campus museum with collections dating from prehistory to modern day.
  • centre for digital media and film practice with industry-standard editing and production facilities.
  • dedicated music and rehearsal studios.
  • specialist spaces for sport and exercise science including a physiology lab, biomechanics lab and gait track. A food sensory suite, food handling laboratory and nutritional investigation rooms support our human nutrition and dietetics degrees.
  • on-campus theatre.
  • high-specification labs and clinical skills suites.
  • smart grid lab and energy storage test bed.
  • translation and interpreting suites.

Off-campus two commercially run farms of more than 800 hectares support our research and teaching in food security, sustainability practices, nutrition and rural energy. State-of-the-art marine science and engineering facilities include the Dove Marine Laboratory, used for field study and collecting expeditions, and £1 million research vessel The Princess Royal. Designed in-house by staff and students, the boat is based at the Blyth Marine Station.

Students benefit from an award-winning library service spanning four libraries, 800,000 print books, 800,000 e-books and 56,000 e-journals and reports. Our Special Collections of rare books and manuscripts includes unique archives of historical significance.

Facilities include PC clusters, innovative spaces to study, think, learn, collaborate and consult, as well as a dedicated postgraduate study room in our main Philip Robinson Library.

Top 10 for sport in the UK (British Universities and Colleges Sport league), we recently invested £32 million in sports facilities. High-tech gym, sports halls, glass-backed squash courts and high-performance strength and conditioning rooms are matched by outdoor facilities at our purpose-built pitches, pavilions and centres in easy-to-access locations around Newcastle.

Student accommodation

We guarantee accommodation to all first-year, undergraduate and postgraduate students where certain eligibility criteria are met. Our accommodation is affordable to suit all budgets, with all-inclusive bills.

Self-catered undergraduate student villages are in great locations, either within a 20-minute walk to campus, or close to public transport links giving easy access to the university and city centre.

Rooms are available with either en suite facilities or private washbasins with shared toilet and shower facilities. We also have a range of accessible accommodation and some studios.

Residences are clustered into flats with contemporary kitchens, comfy chill-out areas as standard and designated laundry rooms. Some also feature study zones, games areas and communal spaces.

Postgraduate accommodation offers rooms with shared or private facilities. We also have self-contained flats for couples, and a small number of fully-furnished two- or three-bedroom properties for students with families.

Entry phone systems, CCTV and on-site support make sure our accommodation is safe and secure.

The Academic Skills Team will support you to become an effective independent learner. Through one-to-one support, drop-in sessions, embedded teaching and an online Academic Skills Kit (ASK) you’ll develop academic and research skills, and can access support with assessment and feedback as well as with your assignments. An ASK podcast, and the ‘Your Skills’ programme provide additional support, with specific study resources for international students.

Your wellbeing needs will change during your time at university, but our dedicated wellbeing consultancy team will help you access the support you need, as well as offering School-based wellbeing advice and counselling support.

We run health and wellbeing events ranging from awareness days to health fairs and drop-in sessions, or you can access our online wellbeing workshops and programmes.

We have an experienced team in our international office and work with educational partners worldwide to support you during your application. Find country-specific details here.

As well as an extensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, we also offer International Pathway Courses. If English is not your first language, there’s extra support when you join us to improve your academic reading, writing and speaking skills with free in-sessional English programmes.

Our dedicated Visa Support Team can help with your visa or immigration status and offer guidance on the EU Settlement Scheme.

They will continue to support you throughout your studies and can advise on the Graduate visa and Doctorate Extension Scheme (DES), both of which could help you build a life and career in the UK after university.

The Graduate visa allows students to stay and work in the UK for up to two years following a Bachelor’s degree or three years after completing a PhD. The DES allows PhD and doctoral students to stay in the UK for a further 12 months to look for a job and start work.

Through our Airport Meet and Greet Service we can arrange to meet you at Newcastle International Airport and take you to your student accommodation.  Our International Welcome Programme will help you settle into life with us.

Run by students for students, the Students’ Union is led by a team of Sabbatical Officers. A network of student representative roles includes over 1,000 student reps supporting students’ academic interests, plus Liberation Officers elected as the voice of under-represented or marginalised communities.

A support and advice hub houses a Welfare and Support Centre and Student Advice Centre. Advisers can provide free, confidential advice, ranging from academic, financial and housing issues to personal and welfare concerns.
